Artificial Intelligence Is Changing What Creates Competitive Advantage

Why organisational knowledge is becoming a more valuable business asset

Much of the discussion surrounding artificial intelligence has focused on what the technology is capable of doing. Organisations are exploring how AI can automate routine work, improve decision-making, analyse information more quickly and support employees across a growing range of business activities. Those conversations are important, but they may not represent the most significant change taking place.

A quieter shift is emerging.

As access to powerful large language models becomes increasingly widespread, the technology itself is becoming less of a differentiator. Most organisations will have access to capable AI tools. Over time, the performance gap between those tools is also likely to narrow. Competitive advantage therefore begins to depend less on who has access to artificial intelligence and more on how effectively each organisation enables it to contribute.

That moves attention towards something many businesses have been developing for years without necessarily viewing it through the lens of AI: organisational knowledge.

Every organisation builds knowledge as it grows. Customer relationships, operational experience, project documentation, policies, commercial insight and technical expertise accumulate gradually over time. In many respects, this has always been one of a business's most valuable assets, even if it has rarely appeared on a balance sheet.

Artificial intelligence is changing the commercial significance of that knowledge.

When information is well organised, appropriately governed and trusted across the organisation, AI is able to make it more accessible, connect it more effectively and help employees use it with greater confidence. Where knowledge is more fragmented or distributed across multiple systems and teams, organisations often find that extracting consistent value from AI requires a different approach.

This should not be viewed as a limitation of the technology. Rather, it reflects an important characteristic of AI itself. Large language models do not create organisational knowledge. They help organisations make better use of the knowledge they already possess.

That is an important distinction.

It suggests that the long-term value of artificial intelligence may depend as much on the quality of an organisation's information, governance and operational discipline as it does on the capability of the models themselves.

As AI continues to become part of everyday business, organisations are likely to find that investments in information quality, knowledge management and governance deliver benefits extending well beyond compliance or operational efficiency. They increasingly influence how effectively the business is able to adopt future technologies, respond to change and support better decisions across every function.

In that sense, artificial intelligence may not be changing what makes successful organisations successful.

It may simply be increasing the value of strengths they have been developing all along.

How Kanj helps

Kanj works with organisations to ensure that AI is introduced on strong operational foundations. By strengthening information governance, improving knowledge architecture and simplifying the way information moves through the business, we help organisations create an environment where artificial intelligence can deliver sustainable commercial value rather than isolated technical success.
